In last month’s newsletter we talked about the difference between marketing strategy and marketing tactics. (marketing-in-the-business-planning-process) As a summary, strategy sets the context for your marketing investment, connecting your marketing to your business growth and tactics are those actions that implement the strategy.

The foundation of strategy comes from understanding how you serve your stakeholders, particularly your customers. Speaking with your customers outside of the ‘business as usual’ conversations is critical to your business success. We call this customer insights.

When we start working with businesses we hear a lot of anecdotes and hearsay about how happy the customers are and much they love working with your business. And it is often the case however when we dig deeper they don’t really know why they like working with you, what value do you and your team add to their business.

[BTW we are also called in when there are some disasters happening with customers and they need a different perspective!]

They may LIKE your business however the bottom line is you need to be delivering value, making their business better and more successful. Wouldn’t your business be better off for knowing that?

The whole context of customers insights is about what you do well now, how can you keep doing that and what do they need from your business next.

We do ask about you – but we also ask about them. What do they have on their plate over the next period? They have business objectives that they need to deliver – wouldn’t it be great to understand how you fit into that plan?
